| Our History | ![]() |
The Telecare Model originated in Sydney Australia by Rev. Alan Walker - Central Methodist Mission, as “Life Line”. Rev. Walker saw a need for
counselling & crisis services and created the model to support the community in Sydney. The emphasis was on care giving with the motto “Help is as close as the telephone.”
In 1965 Rev. D. Bruce MacDougall - St. Peter’s United Church, in Sudbury Ontario started the first “Life Line” in Canada, which became the root of our present Telecare Model.
Our heritage is one of Christian roots, though we are no longer directly affiliated with any particular denomination. We respect the religious and personal beliefs of all our callers and volunteers.
Telecare Cambridge was started on February 1981 by Mrs. Helen McGinnis and her son Douglas McGinnis. At that time there were approximately 30 volunteers providing a Christian based
counselling service. They met at St. Paul’s United Church.
Telecare Cambridge is dependent on dedicated volunteers, generous contributions from individuals and funding from community, regional and other organizations. We are open to accepting applications from individuals interested in volunteering. Please see our application under Volunteers.
